Weekend Recap

So, it turned out to be much colder up in the Catskills than we had anticipated. There was snow on the ground...so the farmers markets were all closed. Most of the weekend was spent in our toasty, warm chalet, by the fire, sipping on hot rum apple cider. A couple highlights of the weekend include a trip to a local antique barn and trip to the farm. Beth wanted to take one of those sweet piglets home, but the farm lady said no way.

gone fishing...

I'm off to the Catskills for a weekend of R&R with the girls. There may be some apple picking, horse riding...and most importantly some fun flea market adventures...

Cool Designer of the Week

I met Majorie Victor a few months ago at the Young Designer's Market in New York. I LOVE the organic qualities that she applies to metal. She has the amazing ability to make something so strong look so delicate...

If you're in NYC, Marjorie now shows at Emerge NYC located at 65 Bleecker St, between Lafayette and Houston.

feeling very wood-sy today

Some might say that wood is the new black. Whatever it's being called...wood is modern, fresh, and has no resemblance to your uncle's hunting cabin in Maine.

Cool Discovery of the Week (part II)

Sometimes, I really can't limit my weekly discoveries to just ONE. Design Sponge is a fabulous blog I just recently stumbled upon. Already well-established and well-known among design lovers, Design Sponge covers a plethora of visually cool things. Though I feel quite behind in my stumbling, I was very happy to make this discovery!

Also, thanks to d*s for listing some of my postings here and here on her fab site!

Cool Discovery of the Week

To my delight, Design Within Reach now makes furniture and other home accessories for kids.
DWR Jax has mini versions of their famously durable designs...for the youngest of design lovers!

This is my favorite! A Saarinen-esque table set by Nanna Ditzel. I wish they had this in my size.

Inspirations this week...

Brought on by the impending cold weather...this week's inspirations are full of slightly somber colors & shapes...yet influenced by tropical visuals and the (insane) hope that it will magically become warm again.

Little Boxes of YUM

Last night, I had dinner at Lacroix...one of my FAVORITE restaurants in Philadelphia. My aunt was in town so it was a small family reunion to celebrate our engagment. At the end of the night, while chowing down on my Chocolate Souffle, we were presented with a congratulatory treat....these little boxes of YUM.

Yum

And then, more sweet surprises with an entire plate full of these little delights...

AND, on a more crude note...the highlight of the evening occurred when my cousin's young daughter received her bowl of chocolate ice cream...presented ever so French, as two small scoops in a large white bowl. It was beautifully presented, but slightly smaller than your typical scoops of ice cream and in a slightly different shape. My cousin turns to my mom and says (in Thai)..."They look like testicles". They laugh to one another thinking that no one else heard (or could translate) her crude comment. But I did...and thought it was just perfect!

10 Reasons I Love Lip Balm

10 ~ It's compact and can be carried everywhere.

09 ~ It's relatively inexpensive (depending on your choice of balm)...which means I can have multiple tubes or little containers...all in different places around the house when the need strikes.

08 ~ I can't leave the house without it. An evening out to dinner without it is PURE torture.

07 ~ They come slightly tinted. My favorites are Perfumeria Gal in Red Current and Neutrogena MoistureShine tinted lip balm in Clean.

06 ~ In case of emergency, it can be used a temporary face moisturizer...particularly the clear balms.

05 ~ Like a potato, it's versatile. It can come in a tube, a stick, a pot, or a wand.

04 ~ It makes one appear feminine and kissable in just seconds.

03 ~ It can be found almost everywhere.

02 ~ It fixes all my problems...particularly the slight feeling of dry lips.

01 ~ It's not addicting...I swear.

Time for a new Fall bag...

Here are some bomb ass bags from Urban Outfitters that won't put a huge dent in your wallet. The plum one in the top left corner is my FAVORITE!

feeling quite navy today

After the passing of a dear furry friend, navy seems appropriate for today...it evokes melancholy...with the hope of new beginnings and peace for those who have gone.

I'm not a curly-haired red head

I don't know what it is...but I have a bit of a fascination with wavy haired, freckled-faced red heads. Maybe because they represent a look that is beyond me. I've never had an ounce of color in my straight black hair...and I've never been able to sprout a freckle no matter how hard I try. I came across this image of this red headed beauty in a beautiful pleated lace dress...wind blowing through her multi-textured wavy red hair...she's glowing, yet she has a secret. This photo truly spells out my fascination. It makes me want to go and get a lace dress and stand in a windy field...holding onto a small secret yet to be revealed.

Mission: Printmaking

I just came across this old test print and was delightfully reminded of my love of Printmaking.

Testprint1

In the past (specifically in college), I took a lot of printmaking classes...I've done woodcut, linoleum block, etching...as well as some additional classes in papermaking, bookbinding, & fibers as complements. I've really been craving a new class to get my hands dirty and remind me how fun it is to make prints... designing solely on the computer really numbs me sometimes. My new mission is to take a silkscreen class, fabric printing & letterpress class. I've missed the Fall deadline at the area art schools, but in January, it's all about Mission: Printmaking. In the meantime, I'll finally try and use my mini Gocco printer--and visit some of these great local Print Organizations in the area.

The Print Center ~ A non-profit gallery who supports printmaking and photography as vital contemporary arts
The Fabric Workshop ~ The only museum in the United States creating and exhibiting new work in fabric and experimental materials
The Print Collaborative ~ A dynamic network of organizations and individuals that enhance Philadelphia's presence as an international center for fine art printmaking

Great Classes in the area...
Fleisher Art Memorial
University of the Arts
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts

For those in other cities...
The Lower East Side Print Shop ~ New York
The International Print Center New York ~ New York
Art on Paper ~ New York & Nationally
Dieu Donné ~ New York
Graphic Arts Workshop ~ San Francisco
Kala Arts Institute ~ Berkeley
Hand Print Workshop International ~ DC Metro
Zea Mays Printmaking ~ Boston Metro
Columbia College ~ Chicago

Multiple Store ~ London

I Heart Melanie

Recently, I have become friends with a girl named Melanie. (You may remember Melanie from the Bloomingdale's adventure.) Melanie is the girlfriend of my fiancé's good friend, Carlos. I have never before in the past become friends with a girl through her connection to my boyfriend, so this was an unexpected surprise. Melanie and I share a love of Southeast Asian food & an innate state of craziness that the guys just don't understand. She is Chinese, but lived in Vietnam for a while so she really loves Thai and Vietnamese food as well.

Last night, my dad brought me a very special authentic Thai dish (pronouced Si Keuw Si Moo), which you can never get at a restaurant because it is not very easy to make. They are small dumplings filled with pork, ground peanuts, and a variety of spices...they are sweet and salty all in one little piece of heaven. But they are definitely one of those acquired dishes, that most people would not be accustomed to. I had Bob try some with the preface that he may think it's a little weird, but to try it anyway. While eating his (standard) Phad Thai, he tried the new dish and did think it was weird. I shrugged my shoulders feeling like no one will ever understand me.

So, I bring some over to Melanie's apartment. As I am explaining what it is and opening the container to reveal the food inside, she says.."Oh, I've had those before!" "Really?" I reply. I tell her to try one and if she doesn't like it, I will take it home and it eat myself. She takes a bite....her eyes light up and she exclaims, "I LOVE this! I love the combo of sweet & salty...Joy, it's sooo good." I happily gave her the rest of the container to enjoy.

I left her apartment with a sense of piece and satisfaction knowing that not all is lost and there is someone out their who can appreciate the untraditional food that I grew to love. I come home and tell Bob, "See...this is why I like Melanie. She really understands me."

Maids so hot you'll want to take them home...(part II)

In my search for not-too-bridesmaids-looking bridesmaids dresses, I've come across some hot gowns I'd really like to wear myself. Whatever happened to the attention being on the bride? With some of these slinky & chic gowns, you really WILL want to take these maids home with you.
