color adventures: a pink and green velvet bench...

velvet bench DIY

As part of our pink and green theme for this month's Color Adventures, here's an easy home decor DIY for those of you who have a fireplace, window bench, or any surface that could use some freshening up! With velvet being so hot right now, we loved the idea of using velvet to create a simple and chic new surface for a flat seating area like this hearth. Here's how...

You'll need:

- about 2 yards soft velvet fabric

foam

iron on adhesive

Here's how:

1. Measure and cut the foam sheet to fit the cushion size you want to fit whatever nook needs a little extra padding.

2. Rather than making just a solid cushion, we made a diagonal color block with two shades of velvet. So we joined the two colors together first by placing a strip of the iron on adhesive along the front edge of one color and then lay the second color of fabric on top of the first with the backsides facing up. Iron them together.

3. Then center the fabric over the top of the foam, leaving enough to fully wrap under the bottom.

4. Flip the entire cushion over, and wrap fabric over the the bottom bonding with the iron adhesive.

5. Finish the ends by folding as you would with a present and a final strip of adhesive to hold it all together.

This is meant to add some color and texture to an otherwise plain spot. You can change up the fabric seasonally with just a couple yards of fabric from your local fabric store!
