styling with mirrors... 27 Apr 2017

styling with mirrors

There's an old interior design trick where everyone used mirrors to make a room look bigger. Remember those floor to ceiling mirrors that were all over homes in the 90's?! We love mirrors and what they can do for a space, but we like the idea of using them for areas that need extra interest, in addition to serving a functional role when you need a mirror near by. Here are three ways to style with mirrors...

yolk & flour in los angeles

If you want some delicious, good-for-you, and BEAUTIFUL food...one of our favorite Los Angeles caterers, Heirloom LA, just opened a new casual restaurant called Yolk & Flour in Cypress Park. Here's a peek...

When I say that this place actually makes me want to eat vegetables, I am not kidding. You will actually want to eat them! But you'll also want to eat the insanely good Detroit pizza, roasted fish, lasagna cupcakes, pasta, and more. Yolk & Flour is currently doing Friday pop-ups this month (go tomorrow if you're in LA!) until they open normal hours next month.

a pink & yellow bird-themed table setting... 18 Apr 2017

Pink-yellow-brunch-blog

We're loving this month's Color Adventures combo of pink and yellow! Today, we have a bird-themed table setting to bring a super springy vibe into any special occasion or meal. Here are some tips on how to pull this look together...

a pink & yellow bird-themed table setting

1. Color block the wall. Yellow can tend to skew a little young and bright, so we color blocked the wall with white to add a touch of color without it being too overbearing. If you keep the top half in white, it helps the room feel fresh and clean.

2. Add a subtle base to complement the brighter pieces. For the table cloth, we went with a light blush pink color so the other  table top pieces pop while grounding the table. The bright pink chairs give the room that extra bit of whimsy and really ties the table together.

3. Add contrast and pattern with plates and napkins. For the plates and the table linens, you know we had to bring in the pattern here. We choose a dotty paint splatter plate and a striped napkin. The patterns mix-and-match well because they have different scales and contrast enough while both still having yellow to unite them.

4. Add the centerpiece. The best part is the centerpiece! We started with a faux green garland and some faux wildflowers. We found these fun tropical birds at the craft store to add extra color and fun to the table. The base colors of the birds were pink and yellow but we added some others in bright green and white to complement.

And there you go! It's so fun and happy and would make for an amazing Mother's Day table!

make a tropical breakfast basket... 17 Apr 2017

Breakfast-fruit-baskets-blog

I have the hardest time making time to eat breakfast during the weekdays because I'm so busy getting everyone else ready to go, go, go in the mornings! So anything that can be prepped in advance is always a big help. And since I love having a mix of different things, we want to show you how easy it is to put together a mini breakfast basket like this one!

a tropical breakfast basket

You'll need:

A variety of easy-to-eat fruit and other healthy morning favorites like:
- Grapes
- Papaya
- Dragon Fruit
- Bread
- Yogurt w/ Kumquat slices
- Kiwi
- Banana
- Watermelon
- Mandarin Oranges

Then, simply assemble a variety of items mixing colors, textures, and variety. In some cases, you can prep them the night before so it's ready to go in the morning. And then, simply add any super fresh items like yogurt or sliced fruits right before enjoying.

These also make for a fun breakfast option to prepare for the whole family or for a having guests over. It's healthy, easy, and looks beautiful!
