Oh Joy Color Adventures: A Blue Lounge... 20 Nov 2017

2017_11_14_November-Blue-Lounge-blog

For our final month of Oh Joy Color Adventures this year, we're going strong with a very universally popular color...blue! We're going blue on blue! This is the first time we've done multiple shades of one color for this series, and we had so much fun styling this monochromatic lounge...

Oh Joy Color Adventures: A Blue Lounge

The main statement in this room is the color blocked blue wall in two shades of blue. We tend to stick to the darker color at the bottom to ground the room.

When mixing shades of one color, make sure you're hitting both light, medium, and dark shades to offer contrast. If you only stick with two shades of blue, it could feel too matchy-matchy. But a few shades (or more) adds depth and richness.

When there is a lot of one color, big areas of white (or a neutral) help to give the eye a break and balance it all out.

What do you guys think? Would you create a blue on blue room?

currently obsessed with: pink and mustard... 17 Nov 2017

Oh Joy outfit

Whenever fall comes around, I think about how my usual love of bright colors often feels a bit intense during the fall. I have been super obsessed with mustard lately (like this coat) and now this comfy, yet chic, shirt and pants. As a way to bring my love of color into this rich fall tone, I've added big pops of pink. Here are two versions of pink and mustard with a pale pink jacket and a bright magenta coat...

Oh Joy outfit

When you have a cropped pant, offset that with a top, jacket, or coat that goes to the normal length and full-sleeve, so the cropping is only focused on one piece not multiple. Also, by adding a neutral shoe, the other saturated colors have a chance to shine!

{field trip} Yayoi Kusama exhibit... 14 Nov 2017

{field trip} Yayoi Kusama exhibit...

I first heard about Yayoi Kusama's work from a recent show she had in New York of an all white room that would change over time as each person who entered would place a colorful circular sticker wherever they wanted. "How cool is that?" I thought. Art that changes over time. Art that isn't always only created by the artist but the viewers, too. I became intrigued and needed to know more.

I learned that Kusama has played with concept of infinity over many decades and through a range of media. The traveling exhibition marks the North American debut of numerous new works by the 88-year-old artist, who is still actively creating in her Tokyo studio. When I found out that the exhibit was traveling to LA, it was a must for an Oh Joy team Field Trip to The Broad museum to see the Yayoi Kusama exhibition...

PAR1217COVER_hi-blog

OMG. I am seriously in shock that I just posted that photo up there. On a recent Saturday, we spent the morning at my studio being photographed for the COVER of Parents Magazine! I was pretty much like...."Um, are you sure you are asking the right person? Did you call the right number?" I am honored to have been included and to be joined by two of my favorite people ever—my girls, Ruby and Coco—on the cover. My husband was standing just off camera beaming with pride. Here's a little peak from behind-the-scenes at our shoot for the December issue out now...

a look back at our Oh Joy for Target collections... 9 Nov 2017

Oh Joy for Target

13 years ago, I set a goal to one day have a line at Target. At the time, I was working as a designer for Cynthia Rowley's Swell line (which was one of the very first designer collections at Target) back in 2004. After seeing pieces that I had helped to design in a Target store and witnessing the joy it brought to a complete stranger, I knew I wanted to do more of that someday. A ton of time passed and blood, sweat, and tears went into starting and building my business in 2005. Fast forward to 2014 and after pitching a collection to Target the year before, here I was launching my very first Oh Joy for Target collection.

As we finish up our current and last collections at Target, I thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane to see all of our collections over the past few years...
