pattern adventures: a grid room

September is almost over, which means we've got some Oh Joy Pattern Adventures for you! This month's theme? GRID! I love how it can work for rooms of all ages, so we're decking out a kid's room that's calm, cool, and collected in grid. Check it out...

1. The neutral grid. A black and white grid pattern is one of the simplest to find because it's neutral and timeless. The focal grid in this space is the grid bedding in both a jumbo scale pattern on the duvet and the medium scale pattern on the pillowcases. We're able to mix the two scales because the color of the pattern is the same which makes the change in scale work without being too overwhelming.

2. Complements to the grid. We complemented the grid with smaller scale sheets underneath and a fun space print! Also, because stripes are like a cousin to the grid, stripes work well when pattern mixing with grids. Just make sure to work with wider stripes (like this rug) to avoid having too many thin lines everywhere.

3. Custom artwork. No matter how good you are at drawing (or not), you can replicate a grid very easily. We made these two canvas wall hangings simply using masking tape and applying them to pre-made canvases. The pop of color in one or two stripes makes them feel extra special and graphic.

4. Accent textures and colors. As always, accent lots of patterns with neutrals in white, muted solids, or metallics when it makes sense. Since we had a secondary space theme here, the silver ottoman was the perfect accent of glimmer while still working with everything else!
