a little preview...

Nantakajoystonecard

Over in stationery land, we're all gearing up for the upcoming Stationery Show which runs from May 18-21 at Javits in New York. Since the show is only open to buyers and press, here's a little Nantaka Joy preview for you from my newest collection to be launched at the Stationery Show. I'll be with a great group of designers represented by Mixed Co. in booth #1448. I'll post more booth information next week...in the meantime, you can see more preview photos of the Mixed Co. designers' booth over at Design*Sponge right here. Thanks Grace!

Dominodrewbarrymore

While I am a huge fan Domino's real (non-celebrity) cover girls, the next issue features Drew Barrymore, one of the nicest and most down to earth celebs out there. The April issue shows off her gorgeous office (designed by Ruthie Sommers) and members of her staff. Check out more images that won't be in the new issue right here...

Craft Inc. Launch Party!

My dear (long distance) friend Meg is having a launch party in San Francisco, next Tuesday, October 2nd, to celebrate her new book Craft, Inc. For those of you in the Bay area, it looks like a fun evening of meeting fellow designers and business women. Hosted by the SF Rare Device, there will be lots of fun goodies given away too. As I told Meg, I'd totally fly there if I weren't going to be away on vacation next week!

For those of you who have emailed asking about availability of my Nantaka Joy line, the website is still in the works with plans to be ready in time for the holidays! However, I do regularly update my list of shops on the current site. There are also a couple shops {marked with an asterik} who sell my products online...

It's Not How Good You Are...

It's been a week of reading creative business books for me and loved this short and sweet book...It's Not How Good You Are, Its How Good You Want to Be by Paul Arden. While the book is mostly geared towards designers in the graphic design or advertising business, there really are some great overall statements made that apply to life and business in general. The quick read book (I finished it in less than 30 mins) is great for a pick-me-up when you're feeling uninspired and need a boost of encouragement. It encourages hard work and determination rather than finding the easy way out. One of my favorites quotes from the book...

"There are no short cuts to any place worth going." - Beverly Sills

craft, inc.

If you're a closet crafter or someone who had a passion for making things, check out the new book Craft, Inc.: Turn Your Creative Hobby into a Business by Meg Mateo Ilasco. The book fills the creative void among the stacks of business books as it targets the artist/crafter/designer who aspires to turn their passion into a business. The book is a great introduction to the world of business for those who are in the process of beginning or looking to begin a business selling your wares. Meg interviews various designers like Lotta Jansdotter, Variegated, Jonathan Adler, and more for peaks into their insight and personal experience. The easy-to-read book (with its super cute design) clearly explains the steps needed for developing products and naming the company to writing a business plan, applying for licenses, and paying taxes. Craft, Inc. is a completely informative and inspiring read. Congrats Meg!

a quick hello + happy weekend...

Hello! I am back from the Stationery Show...and will be taking the next few days to catch up on much needed sleep! Just wanted to say hello and post a few pics for you all. My photos are not that great as I was too overwhelmed with the launch that I simply forgot to take more. Here are a few photos of our Relish booth, as well as some detail shots from my own Nantaka Joy line. A HUGE thanks to the fellow bloggers who have posted such lovely pics and words about the launch (D*S has great pics of the entire show)...and also a big thanks to those of you who came by to say hello and show your support. You'll be seeing Nantaka Joy products in stores very soon ;). For now, I am off to enjoy the long weekend...have a great holiday! -Joy

{A couple answers to your questions... I had the little chair made by a local architectural designer based on this actual full-sized chair which I own. I gocco'ed my pattern onto fabric with fabric ink and then did a mini upholstery job for the cushions! As for availability of my new line, I'll post a list of shops once all of my current orders are fulfilled and will definitely keep you all posted when I am up-and-running on my own site for e-commerce. Thanks for your interest & support!}

{Philly} Ladies Biz Meetings

For those of you in Philly, our Ladies Biz Meetings are now open again to anyone who would like to network with other girls in the area who currently own creative-based businesses or are looking to start a small business in the near future. The group is made up mostly of designers, crafters, and artists...but there are also writers, shop owners, and more. The meet-ups occur once a month at Art Star.

At each meeting, we have a speaker from the Philadelphia area who talks about experiences with their particular business, shares tips & advice, and answers any questions we may have for them. It's a great way to learn from those who have more experience and also meet other women who are currently going through the same steps in starting a small creative-based business. If you're in the area and are interested in coming to the next meeting, please email me at: info{at}ohjoystudio{dot}com and you'll be added to the group list! Poster artist Eleanor Grosch, whose work can be seen at Urban Outfitters and on Keds shoes, will be speaking at April's meeting.

yay for biz lady nights!

We had a great first meeting of the Philly Biz Ladies Nights on Monday evening at Art Star. There were about 20 of us made up of graphic and textile designers, fashion & jewelry designers, shop owners, artists, an architect, an event planner, a pattern maker, a shopping website editor, writers, and more... {and some of them are craft/fashion/design bloggers you may be familiar with!}

We did introductions and talked about our concerns for our own businesses and things we wanted to learn from others, etc. One big topic and concern for lots of people is finding out what you (or your product) is worth and how to make sure you're not selling yourself short. We also discussed various points on types of press, advertising, setting up your online shop, and more...these were all the very beginnings of more conversations to come. It was great to have a mix of backgrounds between those with more creative-based experience and those with business/marketing experience. Since the group is small enough, we'll be meeting regularly to share more tips & experiences with one another.

See our group photo (minus me) below... {Sorry for fuzzy pic, I forgot to turn my flash on!}

{Thanks again to Grace for initiating the efforts to bring like-minded and creative business women together...and congrats on a super successful Brooklyn meet-up last night!}

philly business lady night: dec. 4th!

Thanks to a great response from other creative-based small business girls, our first ladies business meet-up will be next Monday, December 4th at Art Star! If you didn't get an email from me or you're new and interested in coming, please email me and I'll send you more details!

{update} business lady nights: philly!

Open_wall

We've got a great group forming for the Philly business lady nights! I'll be touching base with everyone who responded soon. If there are any other Philly girls who have small creative-based businesses and are interested in meeting with and learning from others in the same boat, email me and I'll add you to the list!

Please respond only if you currently have a small creative-based business. It doesn't matter if your business is a full-time thing or if it's in addition to your full-time job. You can even be a newer business or have had a business in the past. It is most fair and helpful to the others involved if your product or service is currently available or in the process of being available soon! Thanks!

For those in other areas, check out the open discussion at Design*Sponge to find others in your city. Also, for Philly business owners that are not in a creative field, check out this link to an existing Philadelphia Women's Small Business Meetup group.

Designer Interview 05: Uncooked!

Uncooked1

Designer Interview 05
Who: Nat & Armand of Uncooked

One of my first posts on this blog was for a (then) little greeting card company called Uncooked. The funny, off-kilter messages and quirky drawings completely drew me in. In no time at all, their card line has branched into kids clothing, and {most recently} some super fun TV spots for MTV. So, it's been a while since my last interview..but here's a new one with the duo behind Uncooked!

1 ~ Where does the name of the brand come from?
"Uncooked" perfectly describes our style of humor. Very raw, rare & unrefined. And also very blunt and honest and not very well thought out. The second we thought of it we knew it was perfect. Actually, that’s not true. I don’t know why we said that.

2 ~ What inspired you to start your line?
Our inspiration came from pure frustration. There were no funny, cool, unique greeting card lines out there. Every time we went looking for greeting cards we would quite literally throw up in each other’s mouths at how horribly awful and unfunny the selection was. We got tired of throwing up in each other’s mouths and eating each other’s vomit so we started our own line.

3 ~ What is your role in the company?
We both do everything. Technically, Natalie is the writer and Armand is the illustrator. But really nothing is anything until the other one says it is. We both have such a big hand in everything. But it’s kinda hard not too because we both have really big hands. Seriously, it’s gross.

4 ~ Did you find it hard to get started? Did you start the business cold turkey full-time or did it start as a side project while at another job?
No, getting started was pretty easy. We worked as a creative team at an ad agency in Manhattan. That was our full time job. It was where met actually. We started Uncooked on the side, after work & late at night.

5 ~ What is your favorite product or series of products in your collection?
So far, our cards are our favorite. Specifically, the weirder ones that don’t really make any sense are the ones we hold dear. We have this one love card that says, “ sometimes I fantasize about spending time with you in my backyard, grilling salmon steaks and giggling about my big fat crooked back.” We have no idea what it means or where it came from or why we wrote it. But we knew we had to include it.

Uncooked2

6 ~ Where are your items made? Are they made in factories/mills or in your own studio?
We use an outside printing house to print everything. Our cards are printed up in Maine and our baby line is printed somewhere in New Jersey. We’re very continental.

7 ~ What inspires you in general?
Subconsciously we’re inspired to work as hard as we do so we don’t have to work for the man and we can continue to work for ourselves. Not subconsciously, we’re inspired by sunsets. And lobster meat.

8 ~ It's not often that you see stationery designers go into multi-media and TV. Tell us a little about the MTV spots, how that came about, and if you have more plans to do this sort of work...
Our relationship with MTV came about after someone at MTV saw our cards and thought how appropriate our style and humor was for the channel. We always talked about turning our cards into little animated art pieces and this was the perfect opportunity to do just that. Creating MTV’s new brand image campaign based on our card style has taken Uncooked to a whole new level, way beyond greeting cards. We’re currently working on our next project that’s sort of along the lines of the animated mtv work, but bigger. And a lot hairier.

9 ~ What is one piece of advice to other designers and creative types who are looking to start their own business?
Just before you start whatever you want to start, be sure that what you have is totally, completely, one hundred percent unique and original and unlike anything else that is out there. There’s no point in putting something out there that’s already out there. Find your own voice, your own humor, your own style and people will welcome it.

10 ~ What's your favorite thing to do on a Saturday afternoon?
Watch tv, eat egg sandwiches and tweak each other’s nipples.

Thanks to Nat & Armand for their wonderfully honest answers and their take on a running a small business. See more of Uncooked here and purchase their baby onesies at Broadway Paper.

a must read...

If you're looking to start a creative business selling your own products, I highly recommend the e-book by Pamela Barsky called "How to Start a Creative Manufacturing Business". I've been reading a couple business books for a while now as I'm working on a line of my very own. But most books out there, while informative, are not geared towards products and creative ventures. Many of you know Pamela Barsky for her successful line of gift products and accessories. She is using her experience to help others start their own ventures by way of her book and her consulting service. Her book is one woman's perspective and you should not expect to get all things from one view. But if you're starting from the very beginning and really want an idea of how the process to starting something works, I think this gives a great intro.

Pamela_barsky

{UPDATE: There's been some discussion in the comments about this book and those who have read it do have differing opinions. The book is definitely one woman's perspective based on her experience and opinions on how things work and what's proven successful for her. I happen to have enjoyed it and thought it was worth the time & money because it gave me a good overview and kept me in check of things I may not have thought of. Those who are further along in their businesses or have found ways to make certain areas of the business work, may find some of her opinions conflicting. To each her own..as with any book, some will find it helpful, while others won't.}
