2017_09_21_Maxi-Skirts-Dressing-the-Team-28-BLOG

It's been a few months since our last Dressing the Team...and here we are already into fall! For this month, I wanted to share our take on a classic piece that transitions well from summer to fall—a maxi skirt. We're all wearing the same maxi skirt but in different colors so you can see how it works on all of us. And, we now have six people on the team! So you'll see a new face here below...

dressing the guys! 4 May 2017

dressing the guys!

We have so much fun getting dressed up and showing off the style of all the girls at the Oh Joy office with Dressing the Team that I wanted to change it up this month with a special edition of...Dressing the Guys! Whether it's a friend, boyfriend, husband, or brother, guys need a little help in the style department, too! One thing I have learned about guys' style is that they tend to prefer staples and are willing to spend a little more money on a quality piece that will last for a while versus shopping a ton of cheaper fast fashion. So we kindly asked the guys in our lives to come and show us how they'd wear this versatile denim jacket from Apolis. See how they wore it!

Bomber-jacket-12-blog

For our newest Dressing the Team, we're all wearing a must-have trend piece right now—the bomber jacket. Unlike some trends (ahem harem pants), everyone—no matter what size or shape—can wear a bomber jacket. They are such a versatile piece that I currently have a few on rotation as my go-to layering option right now. Here's how we wore them...

Sequin-team-10-blog

For our last Dressing the Team post of this year, we wanted to end with something festive. And what's more festive or says holiday more than a sequin skirt?! Based on our body types and skin tones, we each chose a skirt that we could dress up for the holidays and night out or dress down for wearing to the office or a more casual party. Come see how we wore them...

dressing the team / sequin skirts

Jess, our crafting assistant, is on the petite side (4'11") so she can shop the larger sizes in the girl's section and get a great deal for something that is often double the price in the women's section. She paired a silver sequin mini skirt with an everyday striped shirt and topped it all off with a chic hat and booties.

Jess is wearing a Nordstrom skirt, Target shirt, Chloe + Isabel necklace, Sole Society booties (similar), and Lack of Color hat.

Courtney, our Executive Assistant, combined her ombre mini skirt with a classic white button-down. She loved how the pencil skirt accentuated her curves and the blush accents worked well on her fair skin tone. The white shirt adds a certain sophistication and a nice contrast to help tone down the shiny skirt. I love how super chic this look is for a cocktail party or holiday party.

Courtney is wearing a Target white button down shirt, Forever 21 sequin skirt, H&M heels (similar), and Chloe & Isabel bun cuff.

Julia, our Creative Producer & Stylist, wanted to add a dose of pattern to her gold sequined maxi skirt. High waisted skirts help to accentuate the smallest part of the waist on any body type. So she added a basic grey tee to serve as a base before layering on her floral bomber - perfect for a night out to dinner and to see a show.

Julia's wearing a Target grey tee, ASOS sequin skirt, Forever 21 floral bomber jacket (similar), and dv booties.

Angie, our designer, wears this black a-line skirt to work all the time! I love how she makes it feel casual, yet fun, with a bright blue sweater and silver booties. The black sequins are less sparkly than a metallic option, so it feels really versatile and a good option for someone who doesn't like things too shiny.

Angie's wearing a Target sweater, Benumade earrings from Ban.do, Target black sequin skirt (similar), and Splendid booties.

Joy, that's me! Because I love dancing, I chose this swingy midi skirt in blush pink. I added some pattern with a festive confetti tank and added a light grey blazer to make it feel a bit more formal for a work meeting or dinner out. I added a little extra whimsy and texture with my accessories.

I'm wearing a LC Lauren Conrad blazer, top by Doops DesignGlitterFoxLA sequin skirt, Loeffler Randall sandals (past season), and Benumade earrings from Ban.do.

A few of our tips for wearing sequins...

1. Get something you would wear again. A sequin skirt may not be the most worn piece in your closet, but pick a piece that you could dress up or down and would feel comfortable wearing for multiple occasions.

2. Cooler sequins (silver) go well with more fair skin tones while warmer sequins (gold and copper) go well with darker skin tones.

3. Make sure you can move in it. The material is already a little stiffer than non-sequined pieces, so make sure the cut is one that doesn't feel too tight and you could move (and dance!) in.

dressing the team / vintage! 12 Oct 2016

dressing the team / vintage

Inspired by our recent team trip to Palm Springs, today, we have a vintage-themed Dressing the Team! It all started when some of the girls in the office felt like they could never find anything when looking for vintage and asked me for advice. So all went to the Rosebowl Flea Market together last month, and I gave them some tips on how I shop for vintage and pulled pieces that could work for everyone...

dressing the team / vintage

Here's the pile of loot we found at the flea market. Everyone took home their pieces for minor alterations (if needed) and put together their vintage outfits to show what cuts and styles worked best for each of us! The best part is...all of the vintage pieces ranged in price from $7-$25, and they're so special and one-of-a-kind...

dressing the team / culottes! 23 Aug 2016

Team-9-R-blog

Culottes have been a very popular trend this summer as a fun option that looks like a cross between pants and a skirt. As we head into fall, we're loving culottes as a great transition piece we could bring into the fall. Here's how the whole Oh Joy team wore their culottes...

dressing the team / culottes

Angie, our designer, went graphic in black and white with pops of color and metallic in her accessories. Angie's wearing Anthropologie culottes, ASOS sandals, Danskin bodysuit, and a DIY vintage scarf necklace.

dressing the team / culottes

Jess, our crafting assistant, is keeping it cool and casual in ASOS culottes (similar and similar), ASOS tank, Madewell sandals (similar), Bauble Bar necklace, Noonday Collection beaded bracelet, and Noonday Collection gold bracelet. Because Jess is 4'11", she did need to have the length of her pants hemmed to hit mid-calf.

dressing the team / culottes

Julia, our Creative Producer & Stylist, is making a statement with these floral culottes with straps by ASOS, a simple Nordstrom tee, and Nino suede mules. She didn't need to add jewelry to this outfit since the straps add a lot of interest to the outfit.

dressing the team / culottes

Courtney, my Executive Assistant, is playing it cool and summery in these chambray culottes from Target (similar), Gap tank blouse (similar), Lucky Brand sandals, and chunky necklace by Noonday.

dressing the team / culottes

Joy, that's me...I'm wearing plaid culottes by Ace & Jig, a bodysuit by Thief & Bandit, and Marais sandals. These pants almost look like a skirt when I wear them which makes my outfit look dressier than it really is, yet still so comfy!

A few things we learned about wearing culottes:

1. Culottes tend to look great with a fitted tee (or even a bodysuit) underneath.

2. Whether your wear a tee or blouse, tucking the top into the pants help to define the smallest part of your waist to help contrast with the looser pant style.

3. Since the pants can hit anywhere between mid-calf to ankle, there can be some flexibility in the length which makes them wearable for a variety of heights.

What do you guys think? Have you been rocking culottes this summer?

dressing the team / white jeans

'Tis the season for white denim. It's everywhere in every single style of jean out there. Because a lot of people are scared of white jeans, I wanted to show how fresh and fun they really can be. For this Dressing the Team, rather than all wearing the same exact thing (because the fit of jeans are really specific to each person) we each picked our favorite style of white denim and showed you how we each wore it...

dressing the team / white jeans

Angie, our graphic designer, added a Zara tee and Zuzii shoes to her Gap slouch overalls. It's a fun outfit for the weekend, for work, or for play!

dressing the team / white jeans

Jess, our crafting assistant, paired her true skinny high rise jeans from Gap with a Zara top (with vintage brooch pinned to it), and sandals from Marshalls (past season, these are similar). Since she is petite (4'11"), she got the petite sizing for these jeans.

dressing the team / white jeans

Julia, our Creative Producer and Stylist, paired her Gap real straight jeans with a Zara top, vintage bangle, and Steve Madden wedges (past season, these are similar) for brunch with friends.

dressing the team / white jeans

Courtney, my Executive Assistant, is wearing Gap true skinny jeans with a Vince Camuto top and Steve Madden heels. This look feels just right for a summer date night!

dressing the team / white jeans

Joy (that's me!), our Creative Director...I'm wearing the best girlfriend jeans from Gap with a Jillian Harris for Privilege sweatshirt, Marais sandals, and Putchipuu hat. This is a fun weekend look for being at the farmer's market or the beach!

dressing the team / white jeans

A couple things we learned about white jeans:

- People think that white jeans highlight your flaws, but it's just a matter of finding a cut that works well for your body type.

- I don't believe in the "no white after Labor Day" rule. Wear white when you want to. Except at someone else's wedding.

dressing the team / a jumpsuit... 20 Jun 2016

Striped-rompers-49-team-blog

I was so happy to see how much you guys enjoyed our first Dressing the Team post last month! I love the idea of sharing pieces and ways to style those pieces that I think complements a variety of people and body types. All of the girls in the Oh Joy office (ranging in sizes from 0-14), will wear the same piece, and I'll show you how we styled each outfit differently on varying body types. Here's our newest one!

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

I love jumpsuits. But sometimes they are either super fitting and hard to wear or totally comfy, yet way too baggy. When you can find one that fits you well, they make a statement and become a full outfit with one easy piece. For today's post, I chose this jersey jumpsuit from Boden because the material makes it easy to wear, wash, and can be adjusted to be more or less fitting with the tied waistband. I love this graphic print that's both neutral and fun! Here's how we styled it and made the same piece work for different occasions and different sizes. I also made sure to list the sizes we are wearing for this piece for easy reference!

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

Angie, our graphic designer, is our resident "Sporty Spice". I love how she styled this weekend look for hanging with her two kids. She paired her jumpsuit (size 4) with floral Van's and a Target hoodie. As a mom with a new-ish baby, the V-neck on the jumpsuit also makes for a great piece to wear while nursing.

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

Jess, our crafting assistant, wore her jumpsuit (size 2) with a denim vest from Madewell, nude mules, and a Bunai necklace. Since she is petite (4'11"), she rolled the pant legs to give it a more cropped look.

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

Julia, our Creative Producer and Stylist, dressed up the jumpsuit (size 4) for a date night out with her husband. Julia is wearing a Zara bomber jacket, Gaia for Women necklace, and BC Footwear shoes (past season).

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

Courtney, my Executive Assistant, is keeping it all neutral and chic with accents of black, white, gold and pale pink. If you're fuller in the bust area, try wearing a camisole or bralette underneath the wrap style jumpsuit to keep covered without having to safety pin it. Courtney paired her jumpsuit (size 14) with a Victoria's Secret camisole (past season), H&M sandals (past season), and 31 Bits necklace.

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

Joy (me!), our Creative Director, rarely wears black and white. So I added pops of color to this otherwise neutral ensemble (size 2) with a vintage scarf tied around my waist, clogs by Bryr, and a Babe necklace. I French cuffed the pant legs for a more taped and cropped look.

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

A few tips about picking out jumpsuits for all different body types:

- Choose a soft and stretchy material.

- A built-in drawstring or a belt adds some definition to a typically blouse-y item.

- Pick one that is easy to take off and put on (ie. no zipper or buttons that will get in the way of having to take a bathroom break)!

- V-neck or wrap cuts are flattering on both small-chested and larger chested women because it accentuates a small bust and allows for layering underneath with a larger bust.

-Try wearing the leg both as it is and cuffed the bottom for a different look!
