Make Someone Happy - No. 09: A Blooming Surprise... 10 Jun 2013

With the start of summer just around the corner, flower season is in full bloom (no pun intended) around here. So, for this month's Make Someone Happy video, we're sharing a simple and fun way to surprise someone: an archway of flowers! Whether you're welcoming someone home from the hospital after they've had a brand new baby, wishing a friend a happy birthday treat, or just sending an "I think you're awesome" surprise, it's a pretty treat to leave for someone to come home to.

We simply used vine-covered wire and floral tape to wrap and secure the flowers (dusty miller, spray roses, stock, and peonies) to whatever length of floral arch you want. You can even make a tiny one, like I did to the left of the door. I simply secured both arches to the doorway with clear push pins.

Thanks so much to Yasmine Floral Design for being my guest this time, and to Individual Medley for sharing their beautiful space!

Make Someone Happy - No. 08: Leave a Little Thanks 24 Apr 2013

Oh-joy-make-someone-happy-notes

When I was little, my mom always told me to tell my school bus driver "thank you" when I exited the bus. I didn't realize why it was so important at the time, but over the years, I've realized how many people make our lives better as part of their jobs and rarely receive a thank you. And for me, it's fun and easy to stick thank-you notes wherever I go! So I encourage you to take a moment to not only thank the people you see face-to-face in your everyday life, but also those you rarely get to see or thank personally. It's so easy and can mean so much.

Make Someone Happy - No. 07: A Bright Morning... 21 Mar 2013

Oh Joy | Rainbow Pancakes

Oh Joy | Rainbow Pancakes

For this month's Make Someone Happy video, I wanted to make one of my favorites meals—breakfast—just a little bit brighter. So whether your special someone loves pancakes, French toast, scrambled eggs, or porridge for breakfast, I hope this inspires you to create a twist on their favorite morning meal.

I used this recipe to make the pancake batter (you can even use a store bought pre-made mix), and added just a drop or two of food coloring to small portions of batter to make a rainbow stack of sweetness. I topped the pancakes with berries tossed in maple syrup and a little powdered sugar...and voila!

Make Someone Happy - No. 06: Write a Song 12 Feb 2013

Last month, we wrote a letter to express our feelings. So this month I wanted to take it one step further and create a song! Now, we're not all songwriters or singers (um, I am completely tone deaf!), but that doesn't mean you can't put some of your thoughts down to a simple melody to sing just for fun. So with the help of my friend, Brooke White, I made a song for my Valentine: my husband Bob.

Here are Brooke's easy song-making tips:

1. Write down a bunch of sentences about your subject to create the lyrics. For example: How did you meet? What does he or she like? What are some of the characteristics you like most about them?

2. String those  sentences together to create a verse. Rhyming is always a fun way to make sentences flow together, so for our song, we'd come up with the first line, then write the next line so that the last word rhymed with the last work of the previous sentence. You can even rap this part, like we did!

3. Create a chorus. Also known as the hook, this is the part of a song that repeats over and over in between verses.

4. Make up one more verse with another set of facts—more fun things to say about your subject!

5. Put it all together with simple melody. We rapped the verses and sang the chorus to a very simple tune. Pull out the tambourine, maracas, or just clap your hands to accompany the song!

I hope this inspires you to create and sing a little song for your Valentine.

P.S. A huge thanks to Brooke for lending her talents (even while under the weather)!

Make Someone Happy - No. 05: A Little Letter 23 Jan 2013

The first four videos from my "Make Someone Happy" series have involved making something—an actual object or surprise—to bring joy to another's day. For the next couple, it's all about bringing that joy to someone by telling them how you really feel about them...which is sometimes the hardest thing to do!

And if you need a little help, feel free to use my handy fill-in-the-blank letter to get you started...

Make Someone Happy - No. 04: Party on the Go 18 Dec 2012

This month's Make Someone Happy video is all about taking the party wherever you go and spreading cheer—not only for the holidays, but year-round. There's nothing like a little confetti to help make anyone feel a bit more cheerful this season. I hope you enjoy it—and that it inspires you to fill every day we have with a little spark of happiness.

P.S. Thanks to the girls of Ban.do for being my special guests! The materials used in the video include: clear ornaments in plastic or glass (we sprayed the tops with neon spray paint), metallic sparkle confetti, large tissue confetti, art tissue confettigold pleather, washi tapeneon pink twine, and glitter horns (used to fill the ornaments).

Make Someone Happy - No. 03: Food & Friends 14 Nov 2012

With the upcoming holidays approaching and lots of merriment to be had with family and friends, here's the newest in my Make Someone Happy series. It's all about setting up a fun and festive table for those you love...and giving them some fun surprises when they sit down to dinner.

I love mixing and matching, so I wanted to provide a little inspiration on how I'd mix pieces for the tabletop. And with each place setting, I offered up a few fun things specially picked out for each guest. You can download a template for the photo cube right here (I simply used Instagram photos that were special to each of my special guests), and see all of the mix-and-match dinnerware I used in the video right here. Enjoy!

P.S. Special thanks to Heirloom LA for providing the food and letting us shoot in their beautiful space. And big hugs to BonnieJen, and Bri for being in the video!

make someone happy - no. 02: a sweet surprise 10 Oct 2012

Fortune cookies are one of my favorite things to come across because I love the element of surprise. So, for this month's Make Someone Happy video, I'm sharing a simple way to add a custom message to one of my favorite treats and surprise someone in your life. I found these Siljans Croustades at the local grocery store, and they're the perfect companion to hold your sweet nothings. Big thanks to Stacia of Frosted Cupcakery for being my guest this time and helping me whip up these conversational sweets! Enjoy!

make someone happy: no. 01 11 Sep 2012

I'll never forget that morning 11 years ago as I watched the world change forever. As I took the subway from Brooklyn into Manhattan on my way to work, I watched it all unfold from my stalled train under the Manhattan Bridge. The ability to see the strength in people and the joy we can bring to one another when we're down came alive for me after that day.

For the last few months, I've been thinking a lot about what brings me joy. Sure, I love a good polka dotted top or a great hair accessory...but making other people happy really tops that list. So, I've decided to start a new series called "Make Someone Happy". Once or twice a month, I'll share something you can make, do, say, or give someone simply to bring a smile to someone's face. Maybe it's something you do for someone you love...or maybe it's a for complete stranger. Those moments of happiness are so important to give others...especially on a day like today...

ps. Special thanks to Jihan from Geronimo Balloons for being my special guest & for letting us film in her beautiful studio!
