travel essentials with kids... 1 Nov 2016

travel essentials with kids

From recent travels with my kids, here are a few things I really love...in no particular order...

Ave Dee fanny pack - For when you need to carry some essentials, without carrying a full-on bag, this basic and durable fanny pack does the job!

Calpak Packing Cubes - I pack my whole family's clothes into one suitcase, so these are essential for dividing up clothes as well as for helping to keep things organized in a suitcase full of stuff.

Calpak marble suitcase - I love how light this suitcase is. Plus, the marble version looks way chic and no one mixes up your suitcase at the airport.

Parasol diapers - These are thin and light, yet still super absorbent, and take up less weight when traveling. Plus, you can order them in advance and have them delivered to your hotel or vacation rental.

Lil Gadgets headphones - For a road trip or an airplane ride, these headphone are perfectly sized for little ears and heads and make it easy to keep your little ones occupied when needed.

Toms shoes - When you need walking shoes that are easy for kids to put on and take off themselves. This style is one of my favorites.

Zig Zag guides - When traveling to a new city, it's always nice to get kids excited for things they might see. I love the format of these guides because the cards are fun for kids to pick up and play with as they learn.

Oh Joy for Target diaper backpack - I might be biased because this is our bag, but I use it with my kids as my go-to bag. It keeps all of their essentials and keep me hands-free for chasing after them!

three ways to style a vase...31 Oct 2016

three ways to style a vase

You might think..."OK, I have a vase, so I'll put flowers in it." Yes, that is the ideal use for a vase. BUT...what do you do with a vase when it's not filled with flowers? You can fill them with other fun things like desk essentials. Or, you can use them and style them in other ways that gives them function without flowers, too. Here are a few ideas...

three ways to style a vase

1. Book Ends. As long as the vase is sturdy and won't tip easily, use them as book ends to spruce up what would otherwise be a plain bookshelf.

Props shown: Target bookshelf, Target elephant figurine, Target canisters, Oh Joy for Target OMG vase.

2. Sculptural Decor. If you choose the right kind of vase, it looks cool on its own even when it's not filled. Set it out on an end table, dining table, window sill, or anywhere.

3. Hold Faux Flowers. I'm a big advocate for faux flowers when you can find some you really like. Like not flowers that are supposed to look real, but ones that are obviously faux and you can embrace their non-realness. That way, you can keep them in a vase for however long you want and feel good about it!

Props included: Ai Modern credenza, Target geo burst, Pehr Design table runner, Wee Society print, vintage plastic flowers, paper flowers by Paper Sandwich, and Oh Joy for Target YAY vase.

happy friday + taking the leap...28 Oct 2016

Oh Joy Palm Springs

I always tell people to take chances in life...that you can never be 100% sure about the outcome of anything, but you just have to go for it. We're in the process of getting a new studio...and while it's exciting to start fresh and grow into a new space, it's also scary. I remember that feeling three and a half years ago when I left my home studio for a real life office space. And then when we expanded our one space into two spaces last year. And now, here we are (again) expanding for growth and all the things we can do with a new space. It always works out in the end, but boy does that leap of faith give me all those nervous butterflies, too. You can't fly if you don't try, right?!

{oh joy eats} gresescent ice cream...27 Oct 2016

gresescent ice cream

Ice cream is my jam. So I always love trying new places and new spots that come onto L.A.'s booming ice cream scene (I can't believe I can even say it has an "ice cream scene" but it really does). Gresescent (gres-uh-suh-nt) has 24 flavors that they rotate between. They don't have cones, but rather maple waffle bowls, so that each flavor can be enjoyed separately. Their motto is to preserve the magic of the ice cream through the simplicity of their flavors that are different, yet familiar.

Some of our favorites included: Blackberry Mint Mojito, Pineapple Bourbon Caramel, Spiced Maple Pecan, and Rosemary Toffee.

All the maple waffle bowls are drizzled with maple syrup on top to make it crispier and sweeter. Just look at those slightly burnt edges which are sooo good!

No matter the flavor, the texture is thick and creamy and a perfect treat for a hot day...but really—let's be honest—for any day.

Last week, Ruby turned 5 (five!) and yesterday, my little Coco turned 2 (what?!). I still do not understand how time really does go by so fast. With two October babies, this year, we decided to throw a joint birthday party. I was nervous about having one big party with kids in a range of ages...but I'm so glad we did. It was definitely my favorite party to date, and I was the least stressed about it and was able to enjoy myself the most of any of their birthday parties of the past. Here are a ton of very cute photos from the day and more about what we did if you'd like to see more...
