4 ways to teach young kids about giving back

As my kids get older, it's been really important to me and my husband to help teach them how to give joy to others—especially those who don't have as much or have been born into unfortunate circumstances. So throughout the year, we have a few different ways that we try to teach our kids the gift of giving and to also teach them to be grateful for what we do have. I get a lot of questions about this when I share some of the things we do on Instagram stories, so I wanted to put together a few of my favorite ideas here on how to teach young kids to give back...

3 grown-up ways to wear rainbow

Rainbow has been super on-trend this year in everything from fashion and home decor to hair and nails! But when does the rainbow trend look too young vs. age-appropriate? While I would gladly wearing a full-on rainbow outfit every day of the week, I also try to make sure I'm not one of those 30-somethings (actually...almost 40-somethings) who is dressed like a teenager. So, here are three outfits I put together that feel more grown-up while still rocking the whimsy that is rainbow...

old drawers turned new

There are so many times I see a cool piece at the flea market, but it's so worn with age that it doesn't seem like it will work in my current home with my more modern decor. But, don't let that cool piece pass you by yet! Today, we've partnered with Rust-Oleum to show you how easy it is to bring in the old and give a piece new life like we did with these metal drawers! oh joy team field trip: museum of ice cream

The Museum of Ice Cream is in town, and the Oh Joy team took a field trip last week to the color-filled, sweet-filled space. It's every bit as fun as it looks, and you get to eat ice cream throughout your time there! I don't want to give it ALL away, but here are a few snaps from our visit which included a banana split room, a mint chocolate chip room, a gummy bear room, and of course the sprinkle pool which makes for a perfect ending...

dressing the guys! 4 May 2017

dressing the guys!

We have so much fun getting dressed up and showing off the style of all the girls at the Oh Joy office with Dressing the Team that I wanted to change it up this month with a special edition of...Dressing the Guys! Whether it's a friend, boyfriend, husband, or brother, guys need a little help in the style department, too! One thing I have learned about guys' style is that they tend to prefer staples and are willing to spend a little more money on a quality piece that will last for a while versus shopping a ton of cheaper fast fashion. So we kindly asked the guys in our lives to come and show us how they'd wear this versatile denim jacket from Apolis. See how they wore it!

the oh joy studio kitchen: before... 3 May 2017

Studio-before-19-blog

At the start of this year we moved into a bigger studio, Oh Joy Studio 2.0. It was bittersweet to leave my first ever real office, but it was time to get a larger space where we could designate set areas for all of the different things we do here at Oh Joy. I'll be showing you every "Before" and "After" over the next few months as we work on getting it designed and finished. I'm so excited to work with my friend, Sarah Sherman Samuel, on a few of the rooms in our office. She has such a great eye and style that I'm thrilled to have her hand in our new Oh Joy office! Today, we're starting with the kitchen! The photo above is what the Oh Joy kitchen looks like right now.

It's a decent-sized kitchen that spans a corner of our office. When discussing what we wanted the new kitchen to look like and the aesthetic, I wanted to keep all the surface area but add more. Aesthetically, I wanted a modern kitchen with touches of Oh Joy in accents of mint and gold. Sarah put together a few options for us to review, and here's the one we are going with! This is a view from the top that shows how Sarah added a peninsula in to offer another workspace as well as a small seating area that can be used for meal time or when prepping recipe posts.

When planning and designing the office kitchen, we looked at what appliances were needed for everyday use—both functionally for when our team is prepping lunch and for the many recipe shoots we do in which we need to cook, bake, and prep. I'm SO excited to finally have a real kitchen where we can cook! In the last studio, we were always making things at home and then finishing off recipes in the toaster oven of our faux-kitchen. I'm opting for essential appliances from KitchenAid like a Refrigerator, Range, Dishwasher and Built-In Microwave. Now we'll have everything to cover everyday cooking needs, as well as a dishwasher for when we have events and need to wash in mass quantities (I can't wait to have workshops and little gatherings here!). For the cabinetry, I wanted to keep it simple and clean with white cabinets that allow the colors (and the items we'll eventually have in the kitchen) to pop. It made so much sense to get the cabinets from IKEA to create our custom kitchen with their classic white matte finish. This kitchen will look really beautiful and high-end with cabinets that are really affordable in price.

Here are a few other details and items that Sarah has selected for our kitchen including a sink and faucet from Ferguson, stool from CB2, and sconce from Cedar & Moss. I've been working with Clé Tile to create custom tiles which are a part of a larger Oh Joy for Clé Tile collection coming soon! We started renovations on this kitchen this week (eeek!) and are excited to see this sketch turn into a reality. I'll be sharing the process along the way on Instagram Stories, so come follow along! And a final finished post will be here once we're all done. Stay tuned...

P.S. You can see more of the process and designs that didn't make the cut over at Sarah's blog post right here.

*A special thank you to KitchenAid, IKEA, Cedar & Moss, and Clé Tile for providing their products for our kitchen remodel.
