Green-tea-kit-kats

When I was in Japan a couple years ago, I totally fell in love with green tea everything. I brought home a ton of these green tea kit kats {literally like a dozen packs} and was thrilled to find them here in the states at a Mitsuwa market. They've got the crunch of a kit kat with a creamy, not-too-sweet texture, and so good with tea or coffee in the morning!

ps. you can also find them online if you don't have a Japanese market near you...

{flavor stories} mini peach pavlovas... 31 Aug 2012

oh joy! | flavor stories | mini peach pavlovas

Lately I've been trying to think of just about any way to bake with fresh peaches. Our peach season came early this year but surprisingly it's lasted late into August and brought some of the sweetest peaches around. Almost all the baskets I've bought have been near perfect!

In fact, I'm not sure why I hadn't previously thought of topping mini pavlovas with them. Pavlovas are one of the simplest desserts out there, and I think peaches complement them perfectly.

For the photos you see here I used this recipe from Nigella Lawson except I substituted the fresh berries with a couple sliced and macerated peaches {to macerate, submerge a couple pitted and sliced peaches in Riesling Indian Summer Ice Wine for about 30 minutes prior to serving}. I also whipped up a quick batch of white chocolate ganache and served it at room temperature drizzled on top.

Or for a chocolate alternative, skip the stonefruit and add a touch of cocoa powder to the pavlova mix and serve with fresh seasonal berries. Enjoy!

Canele-proof-bakery-los-angeles-1

Have you guys ever had a canelé? While I've seen photos of them for a long time, I only first tried one earlier this year after my friend Mari introduced me to them. This petite French pastry has a custard batter that's baked inside the prettiest mold.

The result is a caramelized crust and custard-like inside. It has my favorite kind of texture—a mix of firm, with bite on the outside, and soft and chewy on the inside. It's how I love my cookies too. You might think I was fancy and made these, but I avoid baking French desserts at all costs. There are people who go to school for years for that kind of thing! I got this one at my favorite bakery in LA, Proof, and will happily let them be the experts at making them while I'll be the expert at eating them... — Joy

Candy-stripe-figs

Oh, California...how I love you and your magical fruit! The other day I found these candy stripe figs at our local grocery store and had to try them. In season for only three weeks a year, this variety of fig has flesh that looks like raspberry jam with a slightly tart and more juicy flavor than regular figs. And with its beautiful candy cane skin, it's probably one of the prettiest fruits I've ever seen...

oh joy | rainier cherry milkshake

Rainier cherries have been in prime season at my local grocery store, and I've been buying them every week since they won't be available {or this delicious} for much longer. So, to soak up the last days of prime summer fruit season, I made this milkshake using chopped up cherries and sliced almonds for a sweet and fruity late summer delight.... — Joy

Boba-milk-tea-popsicles

Asian grocery stores seriously have the best {and quirkiest} snacks. Bonnie recently introduced me to these Pearl Milk Tea popsicles. Say what? One of my favorite drinks in a popsicle version? Milk on one side and tea on the other with little tapioca {boba} pieces woven throughout. It's not too sweet and pretty refreshing—especially for 95 degree days like we've been having recently. Have you guys had any other unusual and delicious popsicle flavors this summer? — Joy

Ice-cream-mango-graham-crackers

...a mango, graham cracker, and vanilla ice cream bon bon. Ruby's been eating mangoes by the spoonful these days, so I've always got diced up mangoes on hand. I wanted to make myself a little tropical treat and concocted these ice cream bon bons that taste just like a mango creamsicle...

Simply fill half of a mini ice cream scoop with ice cream, add some diced mangoes, and fill the rest of the scoop. Then roll the ice cream balls in crushed graham cracker crumbs. Wrap each one in plastic wrap and store in freezer for little bite-sized snack you can pull out at a moment's notice... — Joy
