...animal cracker ice cream sandwiches! Yesterday, it was 90 degrees here in LA. So, I had to cool off with frozen treat. Because I LOVE making ice cream sandwiches, I made simple ones using these Artisan Biscuits toffee animal crackers that I got from Broome Street General combined with the Vanilla Bean Lemon Verbena ice cream from my Carmela ice cream class. They'd also work with regular animal crackers and any flavor ice cream. If you make the sandwiches ahead of time and freeze the night before, the cookies will soften up. Or make them right before serving for a crispier cookie! — Joy

fashioned florals...

I love the idea of creating a little floral arrangement inspired by another piece of art, fashion, or decor. So, Liz of The Nouveau Romantics created this beautiful, richly colored floral bunch inspired by this Christine Soccio painting. Liz wanted to take advantage of the artist's use of color which translated into scabiosa, astilbe, ranunculus, garden roses, zinnia, honeysuckle vine, feverfew, and craspedia. I love the colors, the texture and they look just beautiful side-by-side... — Joy

{Thanks Liz!}

carmela ice cream class...

One of my favorite LA artisanal ice cream shops, Carmela in Pasadena, just started offering classes...and I was thrilled to attend one this past weekend. My friend Caroline and I spent Saturday morning learning about herbal infusions from owners Jessica and Zach. Because all of their flavors use only pure and organic ingredients, we learned how to infuse the ingredients of choice into ice cream and sorbet. We made Vanilla Bean Lemon Verbena ice cream and Lemon Basil Sorbet...yum! It was a morning of learning and sampling...and what's better than ice cream and cookies for breakfast? Carmela has another class later this month and are planning a savory-themed class next! — Joy

happy friday + hello pants...

Happy Friday friends! I've been all about wearing comfy dresses lately, but sad to see all the pants and shorts I have go to waste because they wouldn't fit my expanding waistline. So, I finally broke down and got a Bellaband...the pant lifesaver. Now I can get a bit more use out of them...hurrah! I'm so happy to be able to wear my green pants again! Hope you have a great weekend...I am off to get some fried chicken with friends before wrapping up my work day... — Joy

Also, Congrats to Clara H. from San Antonio, TX {#1683} for being our lucky winner of the Kate Spade giveaway! Thanks so much to all of you who took the time to answer the survey. We have another fun giveaway coming Tuesday...

Have you guys ever had a purple yam before? Oh my...if you like yams, purple yams are seriously the best of the yammy bunch. Typically used in Asia, they're sweeter, denser, and closer to the consistency of a sweet potato than your traditional orange yam. This one above is from one of my favorite LA restaurants, Jar, which Bob brought home the other night after going there for a work dinner. The simply baked yam is topped with sour cream and chives {like a baked potato} and then smushed open while piping hot. But the sweetness and texture is seriously out of this world {and they're good for you!}. Next time you're at an Asian grocery store and spot some purple yams, they're a must try. — Joy

Who  Margaret Elman and Joy Kilpatrick, commercial tabletop directing team, food & still life photographers, and bloggers

Where  New York City

Time 3 pm - we are always shooting or busy working and forgetting to eat until we are absolutely starving!

What's a typical lunch for you? We usually eat a lot of salads and season fare like farmer's market heirloom tomatoes, peaches, fresh basil, kirby cucumbers, fresh mozzarella or buratta, and a good balsamic vinaigrette. Today we are having lobster rolls to celebrate Joy's birthday. We always try to celebrate anything good that happens with lobster! The lobster rolls were delivered from BLT Fish around the corner from our studio on 16th Street. We were too busy to go out for lunch - typical!

What's your dream/ideal lunch? Lobster rolls at Mary's Fish Camp on Charles and West 4th in the Village, or a nice, long leisurely lunch at ABC Kitchen with a sampling of seasonal menu items - both restaurants do such a consistently amazing job!

Dessert with lunch?  Yes, please! Today was freshly picked, very ripe strawberries from the Union Square farmers market and birthday cake with vanilla butter cream frosting and a super-delicious Valrhona chocolate pudding filling from LuLu Cake Boutique. Usually we'd just do the fruit and maybe a small cookie or bite of chocolate around 4-ish. But today was a special occasion!

Thanks Margaret & Joy!
