happy friday + discoveries...

The amount of time that Ruby can be fascinated with something—a mini tent, a water table, an animal at the zoo, or even her own belly button—amazes me. I will never tire of seeing life through these little eyes...

Have a great weekend all! Hope it's full of little discoveries of your very own...

oh joy + kate spade print {giveaway}...

A couple of weeks ago, I hosted the store opening party for the new Kate Spade store in Santa Monica. As a special treat for shoppers that night, I partnered with Kate Spade New York on a limited-edition print of one of my photos, as featured in Kate Spade's Things We Love book. We had some extras, so here's a chance for 10 readers to win a copy of the 8x10 print, which was only available at the Santa Monica event!

To enter, simply visit Kate Spade's site and then leave a comment here telling me something you love about summer. Entries must be posted by this Monday, June 3rd, at 8 a.m. PST, and 10 winners will be chosen at random*.

*Sorry, limited to readers in the U.S. only. Please do not leave your email or web address in the body of the comment, only in the allotted boxes. Winner will be contacted by email once comments close, and announced at the bottom of this post soon after.

feeling woven...

Inspired by this vintage bag I picked up at a yard sale over the weekend (perfect for my laptop!), I'm loving woven bags of all kinds right now. They're perfect for summer, and they feel like you're carrying around a mini vacation on your shoulder or in your hands.

my favorite {los angeles} beautiful bites lately...

Whenever we can, Bob and I try and have a date night at least every other weekend. It's a chance for us to get out, have some time just the two of us, and try out new restaurants in L.A. or revisit some of our regular favorites. And going to restaurants always gives me so much inspiration in terms of different ways food can be presented. It makes me think about food and composition in new ways—something I certainly don't think to do this when I'm cooking at home. So here are a few of prettiest bites around town these days...

This one-bite dish of toro tartare with seaweed salad, flying fish egg, pickled wasabi and micro-greens with quail egg on top from Sushi Yuzu in Toluca Lake is just amazing. Not only does it capture so many textures and tastes in one spoonful, but it just shows you how pretty a single bite can be.

Red Medicine in Beverly Hills has consistently been one of my favorite spots over the last couple years. They changed their menu recently, but the food presentation is still off the charts. I mean, just look at this green strawberry tart (it tastes like a fancy Key lime pie) that resembles a beautiful botanical specimen.

I love the simplicity of sushi, and the spicy tuna on crispy rice from Katsuya is one of my favorites. Even though it's a L.A. chain, it's always consistently delicious and beautiful.

For my recent birthday, Bob took me to Alma in Downtown L.A. for dinner. We ordered the tasting menu and here are a couple of the simple, beautiful dishes: a berry crumble, which was presented on just the upper third of the plate, and this light and lovely shrimp dish.

Where restaurants have you guys eaten at lately that blow you away with their presentation?

happy friday + surprises...

Last Friday, on the night before my birthday, Bob and I were headed out to see the new Star Trek movie. While I was excited to be going out to the movies, I'm not super into Star Trek and kept joking how I'd find excuses to skip the movie. When we went into the garage to get into the car, the garage door opened and I saw these friends with waiting outside to surprise me. I was confused and baffled...my mind was wondering, "Wait, are they seeing Star Trek, too?" Bob surprised me by gathering the girls together to whisk me off to a sushi dinner instead.

To be truly surprised with an unexpected treat like that really made my day, my week, maybe even my year. And, my friends and family showered me with best treats...mini pies, boba milk tea, cupcakes, homemade mochi, cookies, cake, and so much more. I was on a sugar high for about a week. This was the best birthday in a long time, and I really felt so loved. It reminded me how much birthdays are so special and how important it is to celebrate (in whatever small ways you can) that one day that someone gets to call their own.

Wishing you all a happy (long) weekend full of little delights and surprises...we'll see you back here on Tuesday!

P.S. Just because...Ruby dancing...

P.P.S. I heard the new Star Trek movie is actually really good. Maybe I should see it afterall...

striped dresses + gold shoes...

Over the weekend, I was cleaning my closet and realized I have a lot of two things: striped dresses and gold shoes. How many of the same type of thing does one person need? Clearly, I have a problem.

Do you guys a lot of one type of thing in your closet? (Tell me I'm not the only one!)

fruity summer striped ice cubes...

As summer approaches, I always find myself craving fresh fruit and juices of all kinds. I love smoothies, but it's not always possible to whip out the blender and make a fresh one whenever I want. So I decided to make these pretty (and practical) juice and smoothie ice cubes, which can be frozen and saved to have on hand anytime you need a juicy kick!

Oh Joy | Fruity Summer Striped Ice Cubes

They can be added to some sparkling water for a dose of fruit, or stored in the freezer so you can have smoothies on hand whenever you want some (just put a handful of the saved cubes in a cup and into the fridge the night before). Plus, they are so, so beautiful to look at in a pretty glass with a cute straw!

Here are some of my favorite combos and flavors to use, shown above:

JUICES: I used store-bought grapefruit juice, mango juice, limeade, and made some strawberry/beet juice.

SMOOTHIES: I combined kiwi, cucumber, mint and lime make for a beautiful green smoothie blend.

COCONUT MILK: I layered a lot of these cubes with coconut milk, which can be poured right from the can.

Simply add layers of pre-made juice, smoothies, and/or coconut milk (which I love for its color and for a creamy touch) to standard ice cube trays. I've even been adding veggies (like carrots, beets, and cucumbers) to my smoothie mixes for Ruby, to get her those extra vitamins whenever possible!

What kinds of fruity ice cubes would you guys make?
