happy friday + besties...

Lately, we've been watching the sweetness of a budding bestie friendship forming between Ruby and her BFF Leah (they are five weeks apart in age). They have little conversations with each other in their own secret baby language, they'll offer food to each other when we're out at a restaurant, and when you ask each of them who their best friend is...they'll respond, "Rooo-by" or "Ye-ya". Watching them made me think about best friends in my own life...

feeling like an adventure...

With all this talk about summer, here are a few things I'm loving that make me want to go and explore in some way...backyard adventures, books that will inspire, or fun places and spaces to see and visit...

summer s'mores...

Oh Joy | Summer S'mores

You may know that I have a thing (or two) for s'mores. Well, to switch things up for summer, I decided to try a few new s'mores combinations using white chocolate. White chocolate looks so light and pretty, and pairs so well with fruity flavors. So for your summer s'mores adventures, I highly recommend trying these variations...

Oh Joy | Summer S'mores

Vanilla Funfetti S'mores: Layer sugar cookies, vanilla bean marshmallows, and white chocolate. Then top the whole thing off with rainbow sugar sprinkles on the melted marshmallows.

Oh Joy | Summer S'mores

Cherry Lemonade S'mores: Start with lemon wafers, lemon marshmallows, and white chocolate. Then add slices of Rainier cherries before sandwiching the layers together.

Oh Joy | Summer S'mores

Toasty Coconut Waffle S'mores: Sandwich coconut marshmallowswhite chocolate, and shredded coconut between Belgian Butter Waffle Cookies (these are from Trader Joe's). Um, hello sweet tooth...!

What other s'mores combos are you guys loving for summer?

P.S. They're even better with these summer fruit cubes...

the things you do when you don't have a backyard...

When we found our current home in L.A. a few years ago, we fell in love with the view and the location in the Silver Lake hills. We didn't care that there wasn't a backyard or any outdoor space because we had a balcony overlooking the city. And at that time (pre-baby), a cool view was all that mattered. But now, all I want is a backyard. Sure we go to the park and play on the street outside our house, but I want Ruby to have an enclosed area to run around and play. It's amazing what I'd give for even just a 5x5 foot patch of grass! Even with our lack of outdoor space, I've somehow managed to figure out her favorite activity of all time...

happy summer + a little party mix...

Happy Summer guys! Last weekend, I threw a surprise birthday party for Bob at Heirloom LA. It was such a great start to the summer—delicious dinner and great conversation outdoors with friends while celebrating his 35th birthday. Since summer kicks off (officially) today, I thought I'd share the mix I made for his party. It makes me feel like dancing everytime I listen to it. It's a mix of my current favorite jams with a few otehrs from my favorite music decade of all time...the 90's. It's a little cheesy, and a whole lot of fun. Click here to play my Summa Time Party Mix.

Also, please share your favorite summer songs with me. I want to keep adding to this mix for a Super Summa Mega Mix! Have a great weekend all!

a space to create...

We've been working in the new studio for the past couple months now, and I have to say...it's been so nice having a separate space to work from. It's taken me eight years of having my own business to feel mentally and financially ready to invest in an outside work space, and I'm so glad I did. I thought I'd miss not getting to work in my PJ's, but I find myself more focused when I don't have to worry about the dirty dishes in the sink or get distracted by the incredibly cute sound of Ruby laughing in the next room. To have the literal space to create has been amazing...

While we're saving the full reveal to show you guys when it's totally done. Here are some tiny peeks for you...

P.S. Thank you so much for your kind words yesterday about our dear Bruce...it meant so much ;)

all cats go to heaven...

The other day we said goodbye to our dear cat, Bruce. I adopted Bruce in the summer of 2001 from a shelter in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (I used to tell him that he lived in Williamsburg before it was cool). He's been with me through it all: the beginning of my adulthood as I was looking for my first job in New York; the heartache of September 11th; my move to Philly and marriage to Bob; our quick year in San Diego; the arrival of Ruby—and finally to our current home in Los Angeles, where he left this world on Monday for lots of cat nip and sun-filled naps in cat heaven.

I always feel funny revealing to people that I'm a cat lady, but I've come to realize that pets bring such warmth and love to our lives. Their love is different than what people can offer, but it's just as meaningful and true.

We will miss you, Bruce Mo Cho. You were playful, curious, often mischievous, and so, so loving. Thank you for being such an important part of our family.
