a rainbow icebox cake...

Ice-box-cake-3-blog

Our friend and food blogger, Molly Yeh, was in town last week, so we put our brain power together to make this simple and totally delicious rainbow ice box cake! Here's how...

Rainbow Icebox Cake Recipe

Rainbow Icebox Cake

You'll need:

- 3 cups heavy whipping cream

- 1/4 cup powdered sugar

- 1 tbs vanilla extract

- 1/2 tsp almond extract

- pinch of salt

- (2) 9-ounce packages chocolate wafer cookies, graham crackers, or sugar cookies

- 1/2 cup of sprinkles

natural food coloring

Rainbow Icebox Cake Recipe

Here's how:

1. In a large bowl, beat the cream, sugar, extracts, and salt with an electric mixer to stiff peaks. If you are short on time, you can also buy ready-made cool whip. Divide the whipped cream into 3 smaller bowls and add drop of food coloring to your desired color. We kept it light with pastels in pink, yellow, and blue.

2. Arrange 7 or 8 cookies in a circle on a plate, spread with a thin layer of whipped cream and top with sprinkles. Repeat with the remaining cookies, cream, and sprinkles and end with a layer of whipped cream and sprinkles. To get the rainbow look, we layered the colorful cream in order but you can make the order whatever you want!

3. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Slice and serve!

Thanks to Molly for making this with us! Check out Molly's new book coming in October!

a diy dresser for the nursery and beyond...

DIY Striped Dresser

Our Creative Producer & Stylist, Julia, has had this dresser in her home for over 10 years. Her husband purchased it as his first "adult" piece of furniture. It's moved with him through several different apartments and now finally into his current home with Julia and their baby Zealand. Hoping to bring new life to the old dresser, Julia wanted to "Oh Joy it up" by refinishing and repainting it for her baby's room.

happy friday + san francisco!

Rifle Paper Co. San Francisco Print

We're keeping our summer trip this year low-key and rather than going too far away, we've decided to head to San Francisco at the end of the summer for a little R&R. We haven't been there as a family since Ruby was 7 months old, so it will be nice to be back with two walking kids to explore the city!

For those of you who live in the Bay Area or are familiar with the area, I would love any recommendations of places to eat, things to do with the kids, places to shop for inspiration, etc. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thank you in advanced!

Have a great weekend!

what to do with leftover wrapping paper...

wrapping paper collage DIY

We all have scraps of wrapping paper leftover from those gifts we've loving wrapped and given. Sometimes you buy a roll of beautiful paper only to see leftover slivers get tossed in the trash. So we created these colorful and (super easy to make) pieces of wall art using those scraps that won't go to waste again!

wrapping paper collage DIY

We created a few different collaged pieces using a variety of wrapping paper scraps and put them in frames afterwards to make them feel more elevated.

You'll need:

-wrapping paper scraps

-a frame

-foam core

-mod podge & paint brush

-gold leaf kit (optional)

wrapping paper collage DIY

Here's how:

1. Group your wrapping paper scraps by color and compile together a combination that you like. We recommend sticking to a certain color palette so that it feels more cohesive than a mix of all colors.

2. Tear the paper into strips and shapes of your choice.

3. Using mod podge under and over each piece, paint a thin layer over the strips of paper, and mount them to foam core that match the size of your frame. Continue to layer until you're happy with it.

4. Pop the piece into the frame and display! We left the glass out of the frame but you can use with our without the glass on top.

dressing the team / a jumpsuit...

Striped-rompers-49-team-blog

I was so happy to see how much you guys enjoyed our first Dressing the Team post last month! I love the idea of sharing pieces and ways to style those pieces that I think complements a variety of people and body types. All of the girls in the Oh Joy office (ranging in sizes from 0-14), will wear the same piece, and I'll show you how we styled each outfit differently on varying body types. Here's our newest one!

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

I love jumpsuits. But sometimes they are either super fitting and hard to wear or totally comfy, yet way too baggy. When you can find one that fits you well, they make a statement and become a full outfit with one easy piece. For today's post, I chose this jersey jumpsuit from Boden because the material makes it easy to wear, wash, and can be adjusted to be more or less fitting with the tied waistband. I love this graphic print that's both neutral and fun! Here's how we styled it and made the same piece work for different occasions and different sizes. I also made sure to list the sizes we are wearing for this piece for easy reference!

Angie, our graphic designer, is our resident "Sporty Spice". I love how she styled this weekend look for hanging with her two kids. She paired her jumpsuit (size 4) with floral Van's and a Target hoodie. As a mom with a new-ish baby, the V-neck on the jumpsuit also makes for a great piece to wear while nursing.

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

Jess, our crafting assistant, wore her jumpsuit (size 2) with a denim vest from Madewell, nude mules, and a Bunai necklace. Since she is petite (4'11"), she rolled the pant legs to give it a more cropped look.

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

Julia, our Creative Producer and Stylist, dressed up the jumpsuit (size 4) for a date night out with her husband. Julia is wearing a Zara bomber jacket, Gaia for Women necklace, and BC Footwear shoes (past season).

dressing the team / a jumpsuit

Courtney, my Executive Assistant, is keeping it all neutral and chic with accents of black, white, gold and pale pink. If you're fuller in the bust area, try wearing a camisole or bralette underneath the wrap style jumpsuit to keep covered without having to safety pin it. Courtney paired her jumpsuit (size 14) with a Victoria's Secret camisole (past season), H&M sandals (past season), and 31 Bits necklace.

Joy (me!), our Creative Director, rarely wears black and white. So I added pops of color to this otherwise neutral ensemble (size 2) with a vintage scarf tied around my waist, clogs by Bryr, and a Babe necklace. I French cuffed the pant legs for a more taped and cropped look.

A few tips about picking out jumpsuits for all different body types:

- Choose a soft and stretchy material.

- A built-in drawstring or a belt adds some definition to a typically blouse-y item.

- Pick one that is easy to take off and put on (ie. no zipper or buttons that will get in the way of having to take a bathroom break)!

- V-neck or wrap cuts are flattering on both small-chested and larger chested women because it accentuates a small bust and allows for layering underneath with a larger bust.

-Try wearing the leg both as it is and cuffed the bottom for a different look!

Oh Joy for Target / Summer Collection

Yay! It's here! Our new Oh Joy for Target summer home decor collection launches online and in all Target stores this Sunday, June 19thWith summer in the air, I was inspired by bright florals, juicy citrus trees, and thoughts of being by the ocean all summer long. From glasses and bowls to heart-shaped platters and a super fun bar cart, these were designed with summer entertaining in mind. The pieces are perfect for backyard parties but also for casual indoor gatherings for the rest of the year, too.

pink lemon & grapefruit granita!

pink lemon and grapefruit granita

With summer in the air, icy cold treats are one of my favorite indulgences. I came across some pink lemons at Trader Joe's and knew we needed to make something with them. So today, we're sharing a recipe for pink lemon and grapefruit granita! Granita is pretty fool-proof because you don't need an ice cream or sorbet maker, and you can make it ahead of time and serve when you're ready. It's fun to eat (or sip) on a hot summer's day...

pink lemon and grapefruit granita

You'll need (makes 4-5 servings):

- 1/2 cup sugar

- 1/4 cup agave syrup

- 1 tsp grapefruit zest

- 1 tsp pink lemon zest

- 1 cup unsweetened grapefruit juice (about 1 grapefruit)

- 1/2 cup pink lemon juice (about 2 lemons)

- a dash of cayenne pepper (optional)

- 3/4 cup water

pink lemon and grapefruit granita

Here's how:

1. Combine sugar, agave syrup, water, cayenne pepper, grapefruit zest, & lemon zest in a small sauce pan. Stir frequently over medium heat until it reaches a steady boil. Let boil for 1-2 minutes.

2. Pour syrup into a small bowl and let sit for 20 minutes.

3. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.

4. Pour syrup through a mesh sieve to remove zest.

5. Add grapefruit & lemon juices and mix well.

6. Pour the liquid mixture into a shallow baking pan, cover with plastic wrap, and place in freezer. Let freeze until solid, about 8 hours.

7. Use a fork to scrape it into fine ice crystals, and scoop out to serve. Top with extra cayenne if desired and some basil leaves.

Enjoy!
