Oh Joy Dressing the Babe

What started as a blog series, Dressing the Babe, has now evolved into me putting together fun outfit suggestions for your minis. I'll still post real life outfits of me and my kids when I can, but since putting together kid's outfits is one of my favorite guilty pleasures, I've been sharing lots of outfit flats over on Instagram under #OhJoyDressingTheBabe. Our Creative Producer and Stylist, Julia, hand paints and hand cuts the backgrounds for all them which super cute and a fun thing to see come to life. So watch for them over there where all sources are tagged (just tap for tags on Instagram!)

P.S. I have gotten requests for boy outfits, so I am trying to do more non-girl ones, too ;)

dressing the babe / playsuits...

Mama and Babe Style

Mama and Babe Style

Ah, playsuits...they are this odd mix of super comfy and fun to wear but also sometimes tough to wear. In today's Dressing the Babe, I'm sharing a couple of my favorites and why they are just so good. And, let's be real, playsuits be a total pain in the butt to have to take off to go to the bathroom. So when I contemplate getting a one-piece of any sort (whether for me or for my kids), it needs to be versatile in a print or color that feels timeless and that can be worn and layered with lots of different things.

Oh Joy Style

My newest obsession is this Jolie Coquette playsuit which is super flattering on because it defines the waist and lengthens the legs. I've worn shirt, jackets, and other layers over it and paired it with flats, sandals, and booties. It's easy to wear, comfortable, and has snaps in the crotch (yes!) which means it makes grown-up bathroom visits a breeze. We first came across them on Kickstarter and happy to see they have a full line now in a bunch of colors.

Mama outfit / 1. Jolie Coquette playsuit, 2. Babe necklace, 3. Ban.do heart sunglasses, 4. Jeffrey Campbell booties.

Oh Joy / Mini Style

For a kid, if you're gonna get a romper in a nicer material, I like ones where the cut of it grows with your babe. This one can be worn loose or more fitted so as your little one grows and lengthens, it can still fit them for a year or more.

Babe outfit / 5. Crew & Lu playsuit, 6. Ban.do heart sunglasses, 7. Hadley Girl hair clip, 8. Yume necklace, 9. Pons Avarca sandals.

Oh Joy / Rainbow stairs

Mama and Babe Style

And can we talk about these stairs for a minute?!? These dreamy stairs are in the new location of the Otherwild store here in Los Angeles, and they are AMAZING. Kind of trippy and a millions kinds of awesome, Ruby was loving them as every 4 year old (and every non 4 year old) should.

Oh Joy / Mama and Baby Style

Spring is here! My friend, Jen, has this AMAZING bougainvillea wall in her backyard that is so full and lush right now. So I thought it would be fun to take Coco and do a "part 2" of this post with Ruby from last year. Kids love bougainvillea because when they fall to the ground, they dry up and sound crunchy under their little feet. Coco didn't want to leave...

Oh Joy / Mama Style

I will never tire of a good maxi dress. I wanted to dress it up a bit so I added my go-to vintage gold belt to give it a more polished look.

Mama outfit / 1. dRA dress, 2. vintage gold belt, 3. Target hat, 4. Bryr sandals, 5. Akola necklace

Oh Joy / Baby Style

There's honestly nothing cuter on a baby girl than a little romper. Ahhhh! And this one, has crotch snaps which I can seriously appreciate for diaper changes!

Babe outfit / 6. Pausch romper, 7. June & January hair clip, and 8. Zuzii shoes.

dressing the babe / fancy florals...

Dressing the Babe / Fancy Florals

Dressing the Babe / Fancy Florals

When you have kids, one of the last things you think about is getting dressed up with them. Who puts their kids in fancy clothes, anyway?!? Well, we decided to get dressed up in our latest Dressing the Babe because it's fun to feel a little extra special (and a baby in a swishy skirt or dress is pretty epic). Whether it's for a wedding or other special occasion, here's my take on a fancy outfit for me and my babe...

Dressing the Babe / Fancy Florals

I'm a sucker for a pleated skirt—it adds so much movement and texture to the outfit. I also added in a dickie (when's the last time you've seen someone wear those?) to add a little extra softness and contrast around the neck of this floral blouse.

Mama outfit / 1. Marimekko blouse, 2. Le cou Miette collar, 3. J.Crew pleated skirt (past season / similar), 4. BC shoes (past season / similar).

Dressing the Babe / Fancy Florals

Oh, this outfit that I wish came in my size! There are just no words...

Babe outfit / 5. Crew & Lu floral top, 6. Crew & Lu striped skirt, 7. Crew & Lu collar, 8. shoes by Zuzii.

Dressing the Babe / Fancy Florals

Dressing the Babe / Fancy Florals

If you have kids (or even if you don't), try getting extra dressed up for a day. Don't worry about what will stain, if your kids will make a mess of their outfit (or yours) and just enjoy that fancy feeling. It's pretty fun not to always be so practical sometimes, too.

dressing the babe / winter florals...

Dressing the Babe / Mama and Baby Style

Dressing the Babe / Baby Style

In our last Dressing the Babe for this year, I was inspired by keeping florals going into winter (who says florals are for summer, only?!). My little nugget, Coco, is walking! So we went for a walk near the LA River to scoop up the last bit of December before the end of the year...

Dressing the Babe / Mama Style

I'm loving long dresses lately, especially those that cinch at the waist a bit to give a little shape. Accented by a floral necklace, I love the contrast of the pop of color against the deep green hue.

Mama outfit / 1. D.Ra dress, 2. Vegan jacket from Anthropologie from last season (similar here and here), 3. Gaia necklace, 4. Loeffler Randall booties (past season)

Dressing the Babe / Baby Style

If you have changed a diaper with a wiggly baby before you know that rompers with snaps in the crotch are a must. I love little rompers, but often they don't have snaps and so changing a diaper involves having to undress your babe completely.

Babe outfit / 5. Thief & Bandit romper, 6. June & January cardi, 7. Crew & Lu pom headband, 8. Zuzii shoes, 9. Afternoon Faun Octopus

Dressing the Babe / Mama and Baby Style

Ah...this face! This face makes me want to have another baby (no just kidding, not really). But I do love that face. That's Coco impersonating Adele saying, "Hello, it's me..."

Dressing the Babe / Baby Style

Did I tell you guys I'm in a blue phase right now? There are a few pieces I have on heavy rotation right now that are all blue. So I took my little wild animal, Coco, out for a stroll to this awesome blue painted staircase in our neighborhood.

Dressing the Babe / Mama Style

Mama Outfit / Ok, so I had a bit of a #bloggerfail here and I wore different jeans than what we shot in these flats, so I'm gonna tell you about both which are two of my go-to jeans. 1. Spanx jeans (that help tuck in that not-so-flat post-baby stomach) and Madewell high-waisted jeans (worn in the live photos), 2. Target blouse (which is nice and blouse-y and looks great with a front tuck), 3. Loeffler Randall booties (which have been a staple for multiple years now), 4. En Soie bag.

Dressing the Babe / Baby Style

Babe Outfit / For my wild animal, a very special 5. Peacock dress by Mini Rodini (a good splurge dress for the holidays), 6. Mini Dressing fox knee socks, and 7. this pair of Freshly Picked moccs that lasts forever.

Dressing the Babe / Baby and Mama Style

Dressing the Babe / Baby and Mama Style

I used to hate LA as a tourist—I never got the appeal of this city. It wasn't until I moved here and lived here and got to know the real neighborhoods that I really started to love it and discover what it has to offer. This wall couldn't have expressed my love and (now) feelings for Los Angeles more...

dressing the babe / baby bird love...

Baby and Mama Style

Sometimes you see a piece of street art, and you just have to take a photo in front of it before it goes away never to return again. And, when you can get your baby to smile her toothless smile and capture it on film, that's even better...

Oh Joy / Kids Style

I never thought I'd come back to a black and white phase, but here we are. I'm totally loving black and white again when used graphically and with a hit of color...

Oh Joy / Mama Style

A simple, graphic tee has been one of my go-to pieces lately. Tuck them into anything (jeans, skirts, shorts), and it instantly feels a bit more put together. And, those clogs?!? (You might remember them from this zebra photo).

Mama outfit / 1. Samantha Hahn wink tee, 2. Gap denim jogger pants, 3. Bryr clogs (custom color).

Oh Joy / Kids Style

Those new Freshly Picked sneakers are out-of-control cute, and I just want them in my size!

Babe outfit / 4. Ultra Violet Kids (past season - similar), 5. Camp Wolf shorts from Yolk, 6. Freshly Picked shoes, 7. Crew Cuts unicorn necklace.

Oh Joy / Baby Style

People still think Coco is a boy when they see her in public (since I don't dress her in pink very often), so I'm giving "hints" to people with a little pin or patterned headband here and there...

Littlest Babe outfit / 8. Riley & Co. tee, 9. Ultra Violet Kids (past season - similar), 10. Freshly Picked moccasins, 11. Bitte headband.

Oh, and we're finally at a place where Ruby truly loves her sister. It took us a while to get there, but it's the best to see their relationship starting to form.
